Final Project

Finally, after 3 months of all-day Saturday classes, the final project is finished!

Let us celebrate a successful Web Development "Intensive" (quite the understatement, really) by having some octopus balls and Japanese pancakes!

Class 10 Optional Homework: Comment Functionality to Message Board

**UPDATE 5/3/10**: Added version with pagination here.

This assignment worked out nicely, since I have a similar page that is part of my final class project.

For more fancy effects (to the extent that my non-artistic self can make it fancy), I used JQuery to show/hide both the existing Comments and the Comment Submission form (instead of sending the user to a different screen). Please give me some comments!!!

To more interesting topics. After 9 weeks of hitting new lunch spots in the East Village, and mindful that all-day Saturday classes were about to end, we decided to start re-visiting our favorite ones. Porchetta was a unanimous choice for a return visit, and this time a new recruit Janaina came with us to savor the crackling pork goodness.

I absolutely love this picture. In addition to the huge slabs of appetizing meat behind the glass display case (I wonder if you can break the glass and run off with the entire thing, and eat that over a week...hmmm), you see reflections of the building across the street and the Porchetta logo. Oh, and the quirky counter girl.

Found this Popup Balloons javascript class

I installed and tried it - works great.

Class 9 Homework: Image Upload with Login

It works, for the most part. Another productive Friday afternoon at work. Why don't you give it a try?

(Note: Still a few things to add, e.g. pagination).

After a couple of failed attempts, was finally able to try the Vietnamese sandwich at Baoguette Cafe on St. Mark's Place. Must've been the early break for lunch, because when we left the tiny place was packed.

The eponymous sandwich was tasty, somewhat saltier than I expected. At $5.75, not a bad deal for lunch, but purists would probably have something to say about the taste and price. (The equivalent price at Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown is roughly $3-$4).

Class 8 Homework: Message Board with Image Upload

I used the MOVE_UPLOADED_FILE built-in PHP command as outlined in the W3schools and TiZag tutorials instead of Amos' uploader class.

Got it to work almost at 5pm, just in time! Check out my images!

I should add more error handling (e.g. size, type) later on.

Class 8 Homework: Message Board

This is a little bit (make that "very") barebones, but not bad for a lazy Fri afternoon @ the office. Now I can go out and play tennis!!!

Check out my Bare Bones Basic Bulletin Board (BBBBB).

Class 8 In-Class Assignment: Get Products from DB

After going around in circles, moved the "disconnect" statement to the main calling program, and voila!

Class 7 Optional Advanced PHP Homework: Using Files

Slightly modified version using files to store beer glass descriptions instead of hardcoded arrays. Here it is.

Notes:
Main calling program stayed the same except for a different PHP include file, in this case it was "read_file.php" which read each line in the text file "beerglass_info.txt" (semi-colon delimited), exploded the fields into a temp array, and stored that into the beer glass multi-dimensional array.

After that rather disappointing lunch (see previous post), and a tough day learning the ins and outs of PHP, time for some soothing afternoon tea in a relaxed environment - where else but Cha-An tea house? I had the afternoon tea set (shown above) accompanied by a pot of my favorite genmaicha. Not only filling but makes all your PHP cares go away.

Class 7 In-Class Assignment: E-Commerce PHP version

After some initial confusion and adjustment to thinking in PHP terms, here is the result.
The multi-dimensional array contents are defined in the file "_beerglass.php".

Yes, that seems like a lot of food - I got the lunch special (udon and curry rice) at Udon West on St. Mark's Place, despite not being especially fond of udon (prefer the thinner soba noodles) nor was I particularly hungry. Guess I just wanted to try the Japanese curry which sadly feel short of expectations which were admittedly quite high since I'm a regular at GoGo Curry on W38th St.

Class 6: In-Class Assignment -

JQuery implementation of the Class 5 homework - check out my Belgian Beer glasses! Anyone who wants to check out the Belgian Room on St. Mark's Pl or Vol de Nuit in the Village after class is welcome to contact me.

In addition, I also used JQuery for the top and bottom menu navigation. Same mouseover and mouseout technique, changing CSS background color property.

Class 5 In-Class Assignment

Update 3/14/10:
Did some JQuery reading, created a JQuery version here, works only L-to-R.

Excuse the lame color scheme, but I made it work in both directions.

Class 4 Assignment - Black Book

Well, it took much longer than I thought (my boss would throw a fit if he knew I was doing it at work LOL), and some features I am still struggling to figure out how to implement, but here's the latest version of the Black Book assignment result.

Assignment #2 is a work in progress - check out MTV. Hopefully will be able to complete before Class 6 next week.

On another note, a couple of photos below from last week's lunch at Porchetta, a small shop specializing in its eponymous Roman pork sandwich. Not for those watching their cholesterol though (wait, that includes me!). Anyone is welcome to join our East Village lunch time gastronomic adventures.

Managed to finish one, the result looks different on my work and home laptops though, even on the same Firefox browser.

Welcome to NYU SCPS Web Development Intensive

Update 2pm: Nice, filling shio ramen lunch at Ramen Setagaya with my classmate and new friend V. The Japanese curry side was bland though, nothing compared to Go Go Curry on the West Side. Now I can concentrate on the class ;-).

-------------------------------------------------------

Hello world!!!

So, another blog for me (up to three!)...this one is for the course I signed up at NYU SCPS - Web Development Intensive - which promises to take up my entire Saturdays for the next 3 months (arrghhh...waking up early on weekends!!!), and if the instructor is to be believed, all my spare time during the week will be spent doing homework assignments! Oh no! Oh well, all in the name of learning and self-improvement.

Almost got shut out of the course, but got in at the last minute thanks to someone dropping out. Hopefully, I will learn enough web development skills in this course to make investing my time and money worthwhile.

When is lunch? I'm starving! (Note to self: bring snacks next time). Good thing St. Mark's place is only a few minutes walk away offering a plethora of cheap eats options - will probably slurp down some ramen at Ramen Setagaya today. Or maybe a Vietnamese sandwich at Baoguette. Or both.
